For The Love of Reading

I used to teach junior high level language arts, which makes the following even more dear to my heart.

I'm truly a reader, and I've done everything, and I mean, everything in my power to turn my children into readers, we easily have more then a few hundred books, I've been reading to them since birth. I will almost never say no to a new book, and I remember crying when I realized that my older two kids could read (and can't wait for Tommy to get to that point).

For me, a love of reading, developed early, is one of the best gifts a parent can give to their child, I honestly believe it is one of the best indicators of future success for a child. So, for me, watching my child love a book, swells my heart with joy and pride.

I couldn't help but share these pictures of Charlie, literally with his head buried in a book last weekend.

Christmas brought the first two books of a new series of books to Charlie The Capital Mysteries by Ron Roy, the same author who wrote the ABC Mysteries. It's a great series, Charlie and I have each read books Who Cloned The President and 2 Kidnapped At The Capital and will start book 3 tomorrow (we had to order it).
I'm loving this series for him, for many reasons, he's already interested in history, and these take place in Washington DC a city rich in history - Charlie was thrilled when KC and Marshal were in the White House looking for a secret passage way! He now knows a little more about what the Capital Building is, and looks like. More then that, Charlie loves to read, but mainly fact oriented books the DK Wonder books, EyeWitness so this was a bit of a step out of his normal reading, and he loved it, and read for pleasure!
I was so enthralled with watching him read, no devour, these two books that I couldn't help but get pictures of him, as he did what I always did in my childhood, finished a book in a single sitting.

Atta boy doodle ... the pictures so reminded me of your Mom siiting in the tree in the back yard reading to her hearts content. Whenever I couldn't find her - I knew where to look! You are a chip off the ole block and I am very proud of you and your Mom for fostering a wonderful habit!!!

Isn't that the best? I caught Bailey more than a few nights when I checked on the kids before bed, up at close to 11pm reading in bed! He got a few books for Christmas that were just "too good to stop reading" according to him. LOVE IT!

Love it! My kids prefer book stores to toy stores. When we drove to Ojai on Sunday, they were so excited because we parked right in front of a used book store! The agony of having to eat before we could enter almost did them in.
